Bone grafting operations

In case of implantation if there is not enough bone for the implant to get stabilised through ossification we do bone grafting by using calcium-apatite, which is a natural component of the bone that promotes bone formation and growth onto the implant. In a simple case a small quantity is enough for success we can tell the patient how much it is going to cost to them and what the results are going to be. Membrane is not necessary to keep the bone graft in its place. In this case it’s called simple bone grafting. We talk about complex bone grafting in case of a bigger bone defect and when the result is unpredictable and affixing a membrane is also reasonable, moreover the amount of bone grafting material is unknown (usually several grams is required). The price of the complex bone grafting will be known only after the surgery as it is mainly based on the amount of the used bone grafting material. Unfortunately, the success still cannot be guaranteed. Nowadays, use of better quality membranes increase the chance of success. The reason of using a lot of grafting material is that it will be absorbed – even under the defence of the membrane about 60% of it will be absorbed, but the remaining 40% should still be adequate to build in.

Sinus-lift operations

Sinus lift means the lifting of the bottom of the sinus maxillaris. It is usually done if an implant is needed to be built in the upper molar area, but a few millimetres of bone is missing, so the solution is to lift the sinus surgically and fill the just developed gap with bone grafting material, thus ensuring the sufficient quantity of bone to have an implant built in solidly. In case of an extensive bone defect or if the patient has a very deep maxillary sinus, then its bottom has to be lifted at a few places and several grams of bone grafting is needed – the surgery may not be successful. To protect the bone grafting, affixing a membrane is also needed. This is a more extensive surgery, a more complex sinus lifting.

Bio-oss bone graft (+surgical fee)

Above the surgery’s fee, the cost of the bone grafting material has to be paid as well. The manufacturer of Bio-Oss is sold in half gram and one gram packages. The final price is calculated by the weight of Bio-Oss used for the surgery.

Bio-oss membrane

This membrane is produced by the same company as the Bio-Oss bone grafting material and it’s specially designed to protect this type of bone grafting material. By using this membrane, the bone grafting remains in its place more safely, with only a minimal loss. It has to be placed in between the gum and the bone grafting then the gum needs to be stitched above. The point is to stop the bone grafting from contacting the oral cavity or the soft tissues or else granulation will start (the body will reject the foreign bone and will react with inflamed tissue). The membrane is needed until the patient’s own bone integrates the grafting. After this the membrane either absorbs or needs to be removed through a simple intervention.
